Meet the Squad {10/12/2014}

It's been a month, so I guess you could say I have gotten all settled in. I have been blessed with the world's greatest roommates. Legit. There couldn't have been a better mix of ladies. So, without further adieu, here are my roommates.

{MALLORY WYNNE}
2nd of the Twynnes
"The Musically Talented in Every Aspect" Roomate
Major: Commercial music
Fun factoid-this girl is probably the most hilarious person I have ever met in my entire life. Not only that, but she laughs at my jokes--automatically making her one of the coolest people to ever walk the grounds of BYU. She can make just about everyone in our dorm laugh so hard they cry, and she doesn't even try. I wish I could give an example, but whenever I try and type them out its not as funny as it was in person. Let's just firey serpents may or may not have been involved in these random moments of absolute hilariousness.
Not only that but I think its awesome how musical she is. She can sing, play piano, and write music. Seriously talented if you ask me. She puts in about at least five hours a day practicing and playing the piano! FIVE HOURS. Not to brag or anything, but she was one of the few to get into BYU's music program, so that kind of makes her a big deal.
I seriously love Mallory and her willingness to sit in with me on Friday nights and watch chick flicks! She is someone who you can look to for a good laugh and a fun time.

{MEGAN WYNNE}
1st of the Twynnes (by two minutes)
"The Quiet One..Until You Break Her Out of Her Shell" Roommate
Major: Psychology
Megan, Megan, Megan....Seriously love this girl! We have gotten to become such good friends since moving in here. She is one that was a little shy at the beginning, but once you break her out of her shell this girl is a talker! She is someone you can confide in whenever. I have talked to her about some pretty deep stuff, so that means she's good at what she does. Her and I can talk for hours about the most random things and it is AWESOME.
She's currently preparing to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and is a star example to us all in her faith. Her and Mallory attend the temple every Thursday. They make the long walk to the temple at 7:00 in the morning, seriously, both are examples to us all.
Megan used to be my wingman when it came to Friday night chick flick watching, but she has since been going out on Friday nights.
Cool girl, fun person, and even better listener. So many things can be learned from her, she's a true gem.

{ABBY NEMETH}
"The People Person" Roommate
Major: Communications
We rarely see Abby during the day--only because she is hard at work in the library. She took on a heavy load of classes and to top that off she is relief society president for our ward which puts a whole lot of pressure on her, but she handles it so well. Abby is a people person. You put her in a room with anyone and she can make a conversation. She could talk to anyone. We got lost walking to hike the Y the other day, and she just walked up to someone's house and asked for directions! She's just like that! WE LOVE ABBY! Abby is also the cleaner in the dorm. She likes everything to be neat and tidy, which is totally awesome because that means our kitchen and family room are always clean.
Abby is humble. She reminds me of the importance of being teachable. She's always looking for ways to better herself, and often asks for help. Oh, how I wish I could have the humility of Abby. When it comes to cooking, she is always willing to learn--so much so that she asks to be taught. What an example she has been to me. She's constantly helping out around the dorm and would do anything for anyone--a true example of Christlike love.

{JESSICA RIVEST}
"The Late Nighter" Roommate
Major: Photography
Jessica is a pretty awesome girl. She is so artistic that it's not even funny. Whether she has a camera in her hand or a pencil, she can wow anyone. Her and I both have classes that are later in the day so we spend most of the mornings in the dorm together. She is such a spiritual girl and has a strong testimony. She would never do anything to hurt anyone and is just a genuinely nice person.
Jessica is a late nighter, she legitimately has the most active social life out of all of us (you go girl!) and is out late almost every night hanging with dudes. Super cool girl who can make you feel loved. She is also a pretty stellar cook, she's got some pretty serious skills and I look forward to the day when she makes the pie she's been talking about for a while now!!

{BRINLEY HADFIELD}
THE Roomie (Biasedly my Favorite)
Major: Nursing with a minor in MRS
Relationship status: not so single
It has been hard to come up for a title for Brinley. There are so many things about her that are absolutely amazing. This little bio section on Brin may be a little longer than the others only because she has become one of my greatest friends. She is seriously one fun girl. It's like a sleepover every night. We stay up until 2 in the morning (if I don't fall asleep before she comes home) talking about deep stuff, random stuff, and just downright funny stuff. She doesn't know how to whisper very well so I'm pretty sure the rest of the room hates us for those late night conversations. We have gotten to the point where we have roommate telepathy. It's pretty rad.
Brinley is selfless. She might be having a rough day but she will make sure that everyone else is having a good one. She constantly makes my bed for me on the days that I forget, cleans the kitchen, loads the dishwasher, unloads the dishwasher, all because she loves to serve. If I have learned one thing from Brinley it's to lose yourself in service to others.
She is hilarious. We have a quote wall up in our dorm with all the funny sayings that the roommates have said...she owns a good 70% of them. There is never a dull moment with Brinley....NEVER. We have way too much fun and can't ever stop talking, which is why we go to the library to study, at different times haha.
This girl's testimony is rooted deeply in her love for the Savior and you can see it in the way she holds herself and even in the way she acts around others. She's not here to please man, but rather to make her Heavenly Father proud. She and I have some good gospel conversations and I learn something new from her everyday. How grateful I am to have someone as awesome as Brinley Hadfield be my roommate.

C-O-L-L-E-G-E {09/10/14}

A background of my last week...
*Started college (yay me!)
*Learned that elevation is a killer--for EVERYTHING (baking, exercise, walking...)
*I blame everything on elevation
*Ring checking is a real thing--they're taken ladies, move on
*I rescued a dog, too bad I couldn't keep it thanks to the dorm rules
*Carrying a map around labels you as a freshman
*BYU's football team is on target (Even Siri says so..ask her.)
*I've been blessed with some awesome roommates
*You have to actually plan your meals before you go grocery shopping or you will be stuck eating chicken every night and cereal every morning
*Every time I make chicken (which is everyday) I'm convinced I'm going to poison myself
*I make some pretty good chicken
*Dates are more fun in college
*I miss my family
*No matter how hard you try, you can't get a good angle at yourself on FaceTime
*My mom sent me a very heavy care package, which was good because it meant lots of stuff, bad because I had to carry it for half a mile....uphill....in the sun.....and with the elevation...
*Getting up at 4:30 to go to work is harder than it sounded when it was on paper
*You need to bring notebooks to class if you want to take notes
*Sleep is practically non-exisitant
*Brinley is the BEST
*Studying in your dorm room is the worst mistake you can ever make
*Having only three classes a day is REALLY nice
*Making cookies with your roommates makes for some fun times
*A dorm roommate pic is an absolute necessity after the first week of church

So there you have it, my BYU experience so far summarized into a list.  I love BYU and everything about this place. Not only is the campus absolutely beautiful, but the people here are awesome. I will have to say college is a bit different than high school...A LOT different. Teachers don't tell you the assignments that are due, it's on your shoulders to go online and look them up. You also get to choose your schedule. My classes don't start until after 12, which is nice for me because I can get some studying in before class.  Not only that but you get to pray and sing hymns IN class!! It's the best. When you go off to college you learn a lot about yourself. You begin to understand more of the kind of person you are becoming, you learn how well you manage time, the real reasons why you went off to college, and how much your parents really did for you. I think that going off to college is a very important step in people's lives--you become who YOU want to become. I think this is powerful and somewhat scary at the same time. But, as long as you know who you are, and WHOSE you are, the transition comes a little smoother. I have learned this week that if you put your focus on the Lord that everything has purpose. The classes you take have meaning. The time scheduling comes naturally. And you ALWAYS have time to pray and read your scriptures. How grateful I am to attend a University where I can learn with the help of the spirit.

So Many Acronyms... {8/30/2014}

BYU, MARB, WSC, JKB, HBLL, ASB....the list goes on and on. Acronyms are going to be the death of me. BYU is a place centered around these wonderful capitol letters that still make little to no sense to me. Good thing there was NSO  (that's new student orientation for all you newbies) this week...

TUESDAY: This was the hardest and longest day of the week for me. I woke up really early, which only made the day feel that much longer. I was excited and sad to leave--excited to go off and become the person I want to be, and sad because that meant leaving my family for a year. I'm not much of a crier, never have been, but when my mom came downstairs with tears in her eyes I lost it. I guess that's what happens when you leave the people you love the most. Every year before we start school my dad gives us a father's blessing. He sat me down and laid his hands on my head and gave me the blessing. How grateful I am to have a father who is a worthy priesthood holder, and a family who I can call my best friend. When they dropped me off at the airport my tear-ducts were fairly dry and I was off. The plane flight wasn't anything magical--and upon arrival I was greeted by lovely aunt and cousins. We had the opportunity to visit the Ogden temple and go through the open house. As I was there I kept replaying the primary song I love so dearly in my head, "I love to see the temple, I'm going there someday.." The temple is such a beautiful place and I look forward to the day when I will be able to go through and make covenants with my Heavenly Father.

WEDNESDAY: Move in day!!!! I never realized how much "stuff" I actually had until we packed it all into my Aunt Kate's van. HOLY COW! We crammed everything into my dorm room and to be 100% honest, I am surprised it all actually fit. The funny thing is, my aunt Kate and I are both shopping haters, which means that we were both completely done with shopping by the time we were only half way done, we plan to finish everything up next Monday. I spent a total of about $300, which did almost make me cry on the spot. Totally kidding, but wow, I was shocked. Completely shocked. I am still shocked and contemplating if I still need the drawers that were $12.99 a piece...The college life.

THURSDAY-FRIDAY: We had NSO both these days. It was more fun than helpful and I enjoyed it. We had the opportunity to listen to some awesome speakers, meet people, and get pumped for this new year. I had always laughed when I heard the relationship between college students and free food. I told myself that I wouldn't be lured into that relationship. Unfortunately, this relationship is one you gotta keep strong as you are in college. I didn't show up for all the NSO stuff (because I had a job interview and other things), but I made sure to be there for the free meals--which included ice cream from the creamery, which was so deadly that I convinced myself I could never buy it or else the freshman 15 would become real. Overall, I love BYU and the people here. It is a totally different culture. I'm sure I will get used to it throughout the days! Oh, and BYU won their first football game.

Tell the World that I'm Coming Home {07/26}

The last couple days of our Hawaiian adventure flew by all too fast. We decided to lie low and just hangout instead of trying to pack the days full of crazy touristy things. Fortunately for us, the weather cooperated! We were able to perfect our tans, get some last rides on the paddle board, and hit the golf course up one last time. For me this vacation flew by too fast! If it weren't for my killer tan, I would have thought it to be a dream. But every vacation has to come to a close at some point. We spent the morning before our flight laying poolside and getting those last minute rays in. From then on, we were in the air. The plane flights went fairly well, there wasn't any major turbulence or anything, it was just pretty boring. I have a pretty short attention span, so movies, reading, writing, ect. weren't even options. Instead I got to coach my dad as he played some phone games (I never have games on mine..and there is a pretty valid reason behind it, but that's for another time...). Lucky for him, I am an expert in Spite vs. Malice (kind of like skipbo) and saved his bacon a couple times. We finally landed in SeaTac at 9pm. We were hungry and pretty cranky from our flight, so we decided on Wendy's. A classic cheeseburger has never tasted so good! After our hour of waiting was up we boarded yet another flight! This airplane was decked out with Oregon Ducks colors and everything. The flight from SeaTac to PDX felt like five seconds. We got into the air, got our drinks, disposed of our drinks, and landed. Seriously, fastest plane flight that has ever occured! The air was cold when we got outside, and it reminded me of my devoted love for the PNW. There's really nothing that can beat it.

Woah, duuuuude {07/22}

The family woke up around 7 to hit up tunnels beach. Tunnels is known for it's coral reefs and snorkeling--so we went and snorkeled. We had rented snorkeling gear from Bob's Snorkel gear, and proceeded to the destination. Upon arrival we hit up the reefs because according to my dad, "the fish are most active in the morning" I'm still researching to find the validity of the statement, so I don't know if this is 100% true...
Trying to get all the gear on while standing near the water probably wasn't one of the brightest ideas on my part, but after being knocked over and almost losing my goggles to the ocean, I managed to get everything on and in place! Snorkeling itself was awesome! You could almost touch the fish! They were soooo close! Not only that but they were beautiful! The colors and patterns on the fish were seriously unique. It was cool to see the fish-some swam in schools, some swam alone, some swam with completely different kinds if fish. I, being the unlucky person I am, had a leak in my goggles and water began to start to pool around my nose and the bottoms of my eyes, at the same time, a wave crashed over the top of me and salt water went down the snorkel tube, into my mouth, and then I swallowed it..such an unpleasant experience! But seeing the fish was something I won't forget. We even saw a turtle!!!! I got to snap some pictures with my phone underwater thanks to life proof!
Eventually the reefs became crowded and we decided to go get some lunch at bubba's burgers--the burgers were delicious and the fries hit the spot, I don't know if it was because of how good it really was or if I was just crazy hungry, but, it tasted good.
We returned to the condo and lex, bud, and I went exploring! We went for a walk near our favorite statues, and then went to the secret cove we found the other day and watched some guys surf. Nothing crazy spectacular happened, the waves were especially pretty today and the water seemed to be a deeper blue--it was a sight to see-my camera doesn't even do it justice.
Again we returned to the condo, but this time we found our dad waiting for us. He quickly gave us the look and we knew what was going to happen...we were sneaking onto the resort golf course after hours! We each took three balls and scored our best ball. Thanks to luck and my trusty dusty 6 iron, I was able to par the par three and bogie the par 4 that followed it. We quickly got off the golf course and didn't have to use our super fast running abilities to escape, thanks to slow security. All in all, we had a blast of a day!

A Sunday Drive {07/20}

Sundays are always my favorite on vacations. Crazy as it seems, I love going to new wards and meeting new people. It just further strengthens my testimony-no matter where you go in the world the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the same! I love it!
The islanders have a special way of beginning talks by saying, "aloha brothers and sisters", in which we reply with "aloha". I have never been to a sacrament meeting like that, but I thought every bit of it was amazing. These people have so much love for their Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, along with their neighbors! I was blown away by their kindness and the spirit that was present. One of the speakers discussed the importance of going to the temple. Kauai has no temple, so these people have to fly over to the big island and go that way-they sacrifice both money and time and a lot of these people had neither. I was just amazed at how great of a sacrifice it was for them to make that journey (some only going once a year or once every other year) and how fortunate I am to have the temple 30 minutes away, 50 in traffic. Just something that struck me as important. The rest of the church meetings were filled with the spirit as well. Elder Nash from the quorum of the seventy had visited the ward as well, they said it was fairly normal for general authorities to visit, and I was in awe! I guess it makes sense, this is a vacation spot....just to show you the kindness of this ward, a brother gave out free fruit from his farm afterwards to all members and to those visiting for free, he wanted to make sure everyone had enough to eat and could try all of the best foods, these people truly are the kindest and they have left a mark in my life and have given me some things to think about.

After church we decided to go for a drive, just to see what we could find. And we found the most beautiful areas! Every opportunity we had to pull off on the side of the road and take a picture was taken! We did not miss a single lookout! Ahh, I can't help but think of the goodness of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ! The beauty of this earth testifies of them! Every beautiful thing, it all works in harmony! I love being able to see the natural, untamperd things of the world.

Bliss {07/21}

Totally could not come up with a title for today, so I just used one of the first words that came to mind, and it worked! First of all let me complain a bit. Yes, complain. You see, in my wonderful living space, aka, my room, I again have to share it with my sister (I share a room with her at home, she has bottom bunk, I got top) but because there are no bunk beds, we have to share a king size bed. Unfortunately she is a sheet hog. Which means I sleep without covers. So far, this has been my only complaint. It felt nice to get that out of the system.

I also have been taking the tide packets they provide for the washer. What can I say? I am a poor college student and that's 4 loads of laundry times 8 days which is equivalent to 32 loads--I am totally down for that!

Now, for today we hung out at the beach, and I am starting to get some pretty gnarly tan lines (see shaved ice picture), and I'm not complaining. We built a sand slug bug thing together, and it didn't even get destroyed--which makes me love private beaches that much more--my parents bought a boogie board because we weren't able to secure the free ones from the hotel. We did some boarding and then hit up the shaved ice stand. And it was soooo good! They put ice cream in the middle of your shaved ice!!! So it's like two amazing things together! Oh goodness, it was like heaven in a styrofoam bowl.

We eventually headed back to the condo because everyone began to show a tint of red. Dad and Thomas went on a kyak ride and lex, mom, and I hit up a small shopping mall. We wanted to get little souvenirs, and came back with bracelets, necklaces, and earrings-oh! And a dress...it was totally worth it though, and we are now equipped with a totally legit Hawaiian outfit! We are ready for whatever Hawaiian party we are invited to! :)
